Gecko Campground is semi-developed campground, similar to the other nearby desert campgrounds in the BLM-managed Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area on the popular sand dunes. Gecko Campground offers a stable pad of concrete for RVs and other vehicles to park just off the road on with vault toilets nearby. The Cahuilla Ranger Station is located just up Gecko Road near Highway 78.
The big draw to Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area is off-roading and OHV driving. The area around Gecko Campground offers hundreds of square miles for off-roading, though there are some areas that are marked off limits to vehicles for plant and habitat protection.
