Madrone Campground in Richardson Grove State Park is located in an old growth redwood grove alongside the south fork of the Eel River. Richardson Grove State Park is California’s southern most stand of old growth redwood forest, and the first spot along US Highway 101 where you will encounter the giant redwood trees, when heading north. With it’s proximity to the Eel River, Madrone Campground is a popular destination for campers looking to escape the heat further south and play in the river.

Madrone Campground is one of three campgrounds in Richardson Grove State Park, and is the middle-sized campground in the park, with 40 campsites. All of the campsites in Madrone Campground are shaded by the cover of redwood, madrone, and fir trees. Each campsite at Madrone Campground has a fire ring, picnic table, food locker, and includes access to toilets and showers.

In general, the campgrounds at Richardson Grove State Park is a great place for family camping, Madrone Campground is no exception; you really cannot go wrong here if you are camping with a family. However, there is a little less privacy between the campsites than we prefer, but the giant redwood trees provide good division between the campsites. Huckleberry Campground, which is the campground next door, offers a slightly larger campsites with a little more privacy.

There are plenty of activities for campers to enjoy, including hiking trails and access to the south fork of the Eel River for swimming and fishing. Madrone Campground is actually a popular winter camping destination for anglers looking to catch salmon and steelhead in the river.

The best campsites at Madrone Campground are 41, 43, 44, 46, 48, 71, 70, 69, and 66.
