Oak Flat Campground is the largest of the three campgrounds in Richardson Grove State Park, and has with 94 campsites that are placed in an oak grove on the east side of the south fork of the Eel River. The campsites at Oak Flat Campground, unlike Richardson Grove’s other campgrounds, Huckleberry and Madrone, are located in a grassy oak grove, which provides a nice mix of shade and sun. Richardson Grove State Park is the first place on the northbound Highway 101 where you will encounter the old growth, giant redwood trees. The state park is split in half by the south fork of the Eel River and Oak Flat Campground is the only campground on the east side of the river, which is just a short walk from most campsites.

The Oak Flat Campground campsites include a fire ring, picnic table, food locker, and access to bathrooms and showers.

Oak Flat Campground – Richardson Grove State Park – Bottom Line

Oak Flat Campground is our least favorite of the three campgrounds at Richardson Grove State Park. The campground is very wide open, but the campsites have little to no privacy depending on where you camp, largely due to the lack of bushes and large trees in the campground. Oak Flat campground also seems to attract the most density per campsite; in fact the campsites seemed to have more people than they should with multiple families packed into many campsites. This level of density makes what should be larger campsites at Oak Flat feel like the campsites that are smaller and closer together. The upside of Oak Flat Campground is that recreational activities, especially those that are centered around the Eel River are easily accessible.

The best campsites at Oak Flat Campground are 82, 83, 86, 88, 90, 96, 98, 99, 101, 102, 122-134, 141, 142. 144, 146, and 148-159.
