Bodega Dunes Campground is one of three open campgrounds in Sonoma Coast State Park, which is located about an hour or so north of San Francisco, on miles of rugged and picturesque Northern California coastline. The campground is the largest in Sonoma Coast with 98 campsites. While Bodega Dunes Campground is situated on a bluff overlooking Bodega Bay, there is no direct access to the water from the campsites, however the beach is just a short drive or hike away.
Bodega Dunes Campground only offers reservations for non-specific campsites, which means that, even with reservations, you pick your campsite upon arrival at the campground. Each campsite includes a picnic table, fire ring, and access to bathrooms with free hot showers.
Bodega Dunes Campground – Bottom Line
Bodega Dunes Campground is an average campground, the layout is not bad, campsites are somewhat private, and it is easily accessible from the San Francisco Bay area. The major downside to Bodega Dunes Campground is that it can be very windy at times, so be sure to securely stake down your tent. Since campsite reservations are for non-specific sites, we recommend arriving on a week day between 12-2pm (check-out time is noon and check-in is at 2pm) to get the most scenic sites.
There are no ocean view campsites, but campsites 65, 67, and 69 have a view of Bodega Bay. Avoid campsites 41, 43, 44, 46, 47, 71, 72, 72A,74, 76, 78, 79, 81, and 82; these campsites back onto houses and businesses that border the campground.
